The license is specific to the district that approves the applicant and is valid only in that district for teaching in any assigned class of any subject area and grade level.  Applicants must have a current background check on file with the Department.

Non-Bachelor’s Substitute License Application Checklist

Substitute Teachers Wanted (both Academic and Career Technical Substitute Teachers)

No formal teaching experience required—will train and assist you through the substitute licensing process.

We are looking for both career technical substitute teachers and academic substitute teachers that are flexible, compassionate individuals who are committed to student learning and success to work on a substitute (part-time, on-call) basis as a substitute teacher.

Substitute teachers play a vital role in the educational process.  Adaptability is crucial. They are responsible for creating and maintaining a classroom environment that is effective, safe, and conducive to learning.

ACADEMIC SUBSTITUTE TEACHER REQUIREMENTS:
Bachelor’s degree in any field of study
State-mandated BCI & FBI background checks
Substitute license or teaching license

CAREER TECHNICAL SUBSTITUTE TEACHER REQUIREMENTS:
5 years of full-time work experience in the field (employment verification required) in lieu of a
bachelor’s degree
High school/GED
State-mandated BCI & FBI background checks
Substitute career technical license

COMPENSATION:
$120 per day to start with possible graduated increases to $140 after 30 days
Enrollment of School Teachers Retirement System (STRS) with employee contributions
